All About Google Merchant Center 

Google merchant Center is the mandatory google service you will need for your product listing to appear in Google, especially if you have a product to sell or you own an e-commerce store. So let us see what a Google Merchant Center is and how it influences our e-commerce site. 

What is a Google Merchant Center? 

Google Merchant Center is an online digital platform where we can upload product data and is compulsory for running Google Shopping Ads. It also acts as a source for unpaid organic product listing. We can add all the product details from images to price to tax details. 

How does the Google Merchant Center work? Setup & Requirements. 

Google account is mandatory for setting up of the merchant center and provide the business name, address, contact number, location shop domain etc to Google. 

Next is to provide the information of products in a format that Google needs it to be. Google’s feed requirement has all the attributes to be checked while uploading product information. 

Some of the attributes that we should look after are 

  • Unique Product ID 
  • Title 
  • Link to the product 
  • Price 
  • Description 

Now once the feed is setup, we can submit it to the Google Merchant Center (GMC). 

We have to submit the product data every 30days, frequently if the data changes or a new product is added. This is required for running the ads and to maintain the active status of the products. We can update our feed up to 4 times a day. 

GMC setup is absolutely free of cost though the main use of it to run shopping ads which will be billed via Google Ads, hence linking Google Ads to GMC is mandatory.

How to add products to Google Merchant Center? 

There are three ways in which we can add the products to GMC. 

  • Importing and .xml or. Txt or google spreadsheet data on the product listing. 
  • Uploading the product one by one or manual upload. 
  • Using FTP/SFTP or content API. 

How to create data feed for Google Merchant Center? 

The data feed should adhere to the Google’s product data specifications. Below are a few methods in which we can upload the products. 

Direct API connection- Some e –commerce platforms like Shopify had direct API connection to GMC and the product data will be directly sent to GMC each time its updated. But the drawback is that the data sent to GMC is not necessarily updated to its recommendations. 

Automated data feed creation & optimization- We can add the data using any product feed software and the details will  be uploaded instantly. 

Data export from the store- We can also export the data to a live URL that’s constantly updated and is reflected.
